Night in the kitchen

Have you ever had those moments where you feel inspired to grab a recipe book and make something a little more interesting then the same old chicken and salad dinners? Yes? Well that was me tonight.

I must admit I do enjoy cooking. Particularly if it turns out deliciously tasty...... and I think I find it relaxing in an odd kind of way!

I had some apples that I wanted to turn into a dessert for the little man - and B and I had forgotten to take out any meat for dinner. So I grabbed a few cook books and after about 5 minutes of flicking through, decided upon a Beef Vindaloo from the CSIRO cookbook. I have made it before (burnt the bottom though) and decided it might be a better idea to stay close by this time :)

Concurrently I decided to whip up an apple and oatmeal dessert using a recipe I found on the wholesome baby food website. There is some really good stuff on there so if you are into making the food for your bub I recommend hitting it up!
So I sent B to the supermarket with the little man in tow and while they were gone I started on the apple dish.

Apple pieces and oats cooking slowly

With cinnamon added

Served up ready to go!
Then when B returned from the shops I started the 80 minute cooking process of the beef vindaloo. I took my laptop into the kitchen and cooked/facebooked/blogged all at once to pass the time. A tiny bit of 'me time'. Here are the results

simmering away

almost cooked and ready to serve

The finished product

B and I sat down to eat and he was suitably impressed. The taste was sort of sweetish with an added spiciness (if that is even a word). The two empty bowls proved the meal was a success. Cooking a meal from scratch did however make me realise that I'd like to try and do that more often, less processed and less preservatives - but also good for the soul...

Anyone else been on an adventure in the kitchen lately?

A little bit of bliss

Bliss.

Me - BF- movie cinema - choc top - popcorn - coke.

2 and a half uninterrupted hours of zoning out, no brain straining required.

Whilst these moments are at most a weekly/fortnightly occurrence, I'm loving the chance to be my pre-mumma self, albeit fleetingly.

A simple form of happiness. What can I say - I'm easy to please :)

It's the small things in life.

I've always heard people use the saying 'It's the small things in life'.......

Now that I have a gorgeous little man filling up my days I am finally understanding what that saying means. There are so many aspects of our lives that we can be grateful for and I know that I for one - have been sort of oblivious until now

Here are some 'small things' that have bought a smile or some joy into my life this week :)
  • My little man waking at 4am, but being content and happy to chatter away to himself in his cot, sometimes even going back to sleep. I never thought I'd be happy to be woken at 4am, but listening to his sweet little babbles and giggles is sooooooooo cute!
  • Little man's squeals if joy when I call to him as I walk down the hall - so cute that he knows I'm coming to get him out of bed!
  • I read a book! I know this doesn't seem like much - but I LOVE reading and since having a baby in October it something that I haven't been able to find time to do!
  • Filming the little man on my iPhone and then showing him the video and seeing him watch it, Intrigued and then laughing and smiling at himself!
  • Listening to B talk to the little man through the baby monitor - It's so sweet how much he loves him!
  • Little man laughing everytime we say dadadadadad to him. He thinks it's so funny.
  • Having time to do some Suduko - It was so good to actually use my brain in a strategic way!
  • Realising how much my life has changed over the past four months - and how selfless I have become in my new role
I'm sure there are more things - but I feel like I've been a bit too focussed on my little man! Well if there is something small that has bough some happiness to you this week I'd love to hear about it! What has made you smile?

How do you enjoy "me time"????

When I am at home with the little man all day, I sometimes just crave some time to myself, which is why I will happily hand him over as soon as his Daddy walks in the door. That and also I love the way B acts around the little man, makes me realise why I love him.

So last night my little man woke at 3:40am. The last few weeks he has been sleeping through which has been AWESOME! I know I'm lucky, but I have kind of gotten used to it so I found last night hard. Especially because B usually wakes up early and goes fishing or to the gym because he's on holidays, so no matter what time the little guy wakes I have to get up to him regardless of the sleep or lack thereof I've had.

So B says this morning "I'll take the little guy for a walk so you can sleep in". Fantastic I thought to myself - but instead the whole time they have been gone I have been wondering when they'll be back! The house is so quiet - I want to hear the little man chattering and laughing!

Why can't I enjoy this "me time" when I finally get it?
